Background of the study
Online examination systems have become an essential tool in modern education, especially with the rise of e-learning platforms and digital assessments. At the University of Jos, Plateau State, traditional methods of conducting exams have led to challenges such as exam scheduling conflicts, physical resource limitations, and delayed grading (Jibril & Ojo, 2023). Moreover, the COVID-19 pandemic further highlighted the need for online examination systems to ensure continuity in education, even during disruptions (Lawal & Tunde, 2023). The implementation of an online examination system promises to provide a more flexible, efficient, and secure means of conducting exams.

Such systems utilize secure online platforms to administer, monitor, and grade exams, allowing for immediate feedback and seamless integration into existing academic infrastructures. This study aims to design and implement an online examination system at the University of Jos, which will improve the efficiency of exam administration, reduce administrative burden, and ensure a more secure and transparent assessment process.

Statement of the problem
The University of Jos currently faces inefficiencies in exam administration due to the reliance on traditional, manual processes. These challenges include scheduling issues, long processing times, and human errors. This study seeks to design and implement an online examination system that will streamline the exam process and provide a secure, efficient solution to the current challenges.

Objectives of the study

  1. To design an online examination system that enables efficient exam administration at the University of Jos.

  2. To implement the online examination system, integrating it with existing academic management systems.

  3. To evaluate the effectiveness of the system in improving exam scheduling, security, and grading efficiency.

Research questions

  1. How effective is the online examination system in reducing exam scheduling conflicts and errors?

  2. What impact does the system have on the speed and accuracy of grading and feedback?

  3. How do students and faculty perceive the usability and security of the online examination system?

Significance of the study
The design and implementation of an online examination system will improve the efficiency, security, and accuracy of exam administration at the University of Jos. This will contribute to better academic management, reduce administrative workload, and enhance the student experience.

Scope and limitations of the study
The study will focus on the design and implementation of an online examination system at the University of Jos, Plateau State. It will evaluate the system’s impact on exam efficiency but will not extend to other universities or educational institutions.

Definitions of terms
